A little bit about Luxborough

Luxborough Parish…

Luxborough is a small village and civil parish located some 6 miles (9.7 km) south of Dunster, lying amongst the Brendon Hills and the Exmoor National Park in Somerset, England. Luxborough, ‘Lolochesberie’ in the Domesday Book, means ‘stronghold or hill of a man called Lulluc’.

Comprising of the hamlets of Churchtown, Kingsbridge and Pooltown, Luxborough is a small village nestled beneath Croydon Hill within the Brendon Hills of Exmoor National Park.

The Washford River rises close to the village and flows through the valley, with Pooltown taken taking its name from the large number of pools on the river there. The area was once a centre for mining but is now dominated by farming and forestry. It is a deeply wooded area laying at 600ft and a good point for exploring the forests of the Brendon Hills.

St Mary’s church dates back to Norman times, whilst a new window was fitted as recently as 2002. Many of the cottages in the area are thatched and the village inn, dating back to the 18th century, is well regarded.
